Mammogram

Mammogram

A mammogram is an X-ray image of your breasts. It can be used either for breast cancer screening or for investigating suspicious breast changes, such as a breast lump, breast pain or unusual skin appearance.

Mammograms play a key role in breast cancer screening by detecting breast cancer before it causes signs and symptoms. Mammograms have been shown to reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer.

Screening mammograms can not detect all cancers and is therefore usually done in combination with a breast ultrasound. A cancer may be missed if it's too small or is located in an area that is difficult to view, such as your armpit.

Mammograms are done with a specialized machine designed to examine only breast tissue, allowing for lower doses of radiation than standard X-rays. During a mammogram the breast is compressed between 2 plates to flatten the breast tissue. This gives a better quality picture and allows less radiation to be used.

Mammogram is suitable for people with the following:

  • Woman aged 40 years and above for breast cancer screening
  • History of breast lumps or breast cancer
