Ultrasound

Ultrasound

Diagnostic ultrasound or sonography is an imaging procedure that uses sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. These images can help provide valuable information to help diagnose disease conditions and guide treatment. Ultrasound is safe, noninvasive, and does not use radiation.

Doppler ultrasound may be part of an ultrasound examination. Doppler is a special ultrasound technique that evaluates movement of materials in the body and is used to visualize and evaluate blood flow through arteries and veins in the body.

Ultrasound is a useful way of examining many of the body's internal organs, including but not limited to the following:

  • Liver
  • Gallbladder
  • Spleen
  • Pancreas
  • Kidneys
  • Bladder
  • Breasts
  • Uterus, ovaries, and unborn child (fetus) in pregnancy
  • Prostate
  • Thyroid
  • Heart and heart valves (Echocardiogram)
  • Blood vessels, blockages to blood flow (such as clots), narrowing of vessels (such as from atherosclerosis)

Ultrasound is suitable for people with the following:

  • General health concerns for annual health check-up
  • Family history or risk of cancer, heart attack or stroke
  • High risk activities such as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption
  • Sedentary lifestyle
